Steve Austin is a life member of the Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder Company of Newark, Del., where he serves as a fire police officer. He is involved in national fire service issues as the director of governmental relations for the International Association of Arson Investigators. He serves as a member of a number of boards and foundations, including the board of directors of the Safety Health and Survival Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. He is the fire service advisor to the Congressional Fire Services Institute.

Austin serves as vice-chairman of the Fire Service National Professional Qualifications System and is a 2005 senior fellow at the George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute. He helped establish the Advocates for Fire Service Based EMS and serves as the group’s co-chair. He is past president of the Delaware Volunteer Firemen’s Association and the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association.
