Chief Billy Goldfeder, EFO, has been a firefighter since 1973 and chief since 1982.


He has served as a public protection representative covering southern New York for Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO), as well as a company officer, starting with the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department, Long Island, N.Y.


A 1993 graduate of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program, he is a former chair of the International Association of Fire Chiefs VCOS Section.


In 2001, Goldfeder was honored with an appointment as honorary battalion chief for the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). He is a member of the board of directors of the September 11th Families Association and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, and also provides technical assistance to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program.


Chief Goldfeder is the recipient of numerous operational and administrative awards, some of which include:


  • Loveland-Symmes Fire Department Award of Excellence
  • ISFSI Fire Instructor of the Year Award
  • Dana Hannon Fire Training Award
  • IAVD Presidential Award
  • IFSTA Everett E. Hudiburg Memorial Award for firefighter training excellence

He recently completed his sixth year on the Commission of Fire Accreditation International. He serves as an associate/contributing editor for Firehouse.com, Firehouse Magazine, Fire Engineering, Fire Rescue, and is a member of the Fire and Emergency Television Network (FETN) Advisory Board. He has spoken on, as well as published numerous articles on, subjects such as combination fire departments, fire command and tactics, firefighter/fireground safety, apparatus design and deployment, and fireground staffing. His monthly column, "Close Calls," appears in Firehouse Magazine and he hosts a bi-weekly radio show on Firehouse.com.


In addition to serving on numerous committees and task forces, Goldfeder has been an instructor at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) for the past 25 years and a member of the FDIC Advisory Board for the past 15. He provides consulting services for municipal and private corporations.


In partnership with Captain Gordon Graham, California Highway Patrol, Goldfeder hosts and sponsors FireFighterCloseCalls.com, a nonprofit, independent Web site dedicated to firefighter safety and survival.
